Well, it’s about time!

One of my greatest childhood dreams! I’m not sure this means we’ll all be zipping around on hoverboards anytime soon, but it’s sure fun to think about. I want one with little jet engines, like Biff’s.

My jet pack should also be on its way soon. I’ll live without the flying car… I’m terrified to be around half the people on the 101 every day in cars with wheels.

That’s Ristockulous!

I just had to stop telling myself “I’ll do it someday…”

During the tedious process of shuffling through royalty-free stock photography for any given cheap client, I’ve always had my spirits lifted by stock imagery that is just downright ridiculous. These gems turn 180º and become completely awesome. I’ve threatened for years to start collecting them and now, I am.

Better than Sustainability

This project won second place in the Evolo 2010 Skyscraper Competition

Not only is the project beautiful, original and sustainable, but it also cleans and improves living conditions on the the Ciliwung River on which it is proposed to be built.

The Ciliwung Recovery Program (CRP) is a project that aims to collect the garbage of the riverbank and purify its water through an ingenious system of mega-filters that operate in three different phases. The first one separates the different types of garbage and utilizes the organic one to fertilize its soil. The second phase purifies the water by removing dangerous chemicals and adding important minerals to it. The clean water is then fed to the river and to the nearby agricultural fields through a system of capillary tubes.  Finally in the third phase all the recyclable waste is processed.

One of the most important aspects of this proposal is the elimination of the slums along the river. The majority of the people will live and work at the CRP which could be understood as new city within Jakarta. The CRP project will be a 100 percent sustainable building that will produce energy through wind, solar, and hydroelectric systems.

Concept Vehicles & Design License

How much for this puppy?

There are only a handful of people in the world that influence the design of automobiles. Even fewer that influence the design of other vehicles. None of them as powerful as budget & schedule. When designing a vehicle, millions of factors come into play, and in my opinion, it’s the ultimate synthesis of industrial design, consumer psychology, manufacturing ability and in all likelihood internal struggle and disorganization.

The things that make a vehicle design great are the nuances. Details that themselves take weeks of design and engineering, yet somehow manage to work cohesively with other elements. It’s a bit like making a movie. Working in the interactive realm, I’ve seen first hand that getting a good looking functional website up and running, with a few clicks and conversions is a deceptively complex task; giving me massive respect for the people that take on the far more complex vehicle designs.

Although some of them may never be functional, or even reasonable, the creative liberation displayed in concept vehicles is worthy of awe. It’s also something that inspires me to take my own design shackles off once and a while. So this may not be a complete collection of all bleeding edge concept vehicles from 2010, but just a few I find inspirational.

Infographic Inspiration

Google’s Public Data Explorer has me on a infographic kick.

I normally sift through the visualcomplexity feed for information design consumption, but I found a couple of other sites including chartporn (great name) that led me to some really cool stuff. Google’s taken a great first step, but I’d love to see some of those massive data sets with more creative treatment.

Middle Ground for your Inner Geek & Designer

thisisrealart produced this series of beautiful documentary videos for Astra, a company that makes satellites.

If you are nerdy like me, you’ll want to hurry up and watch them all.

As seen by the Netflix Prize Algorithm

Remember the Netflix Prize?

“BellKor’s Pragmatic Chaos” (whatever that means) took the million cold, but Christopher Hefele did some great visualizations around what the algorithm entails.

From visualcomplexity:

This visualization depicts the similarities between 5,000 movies as found by an algorithm used for the Netflix Prize. Movies are represented by dots with adjacent titles. Similar movies, as determined by customer rating patterns, are connected by a line. Colors closer to red indicate a weaker similarity, and colors closer to yellow indicate a stronger similarity. Many similarly-rated movies tend to cluster around topics, themes, directors, or actors.
